I believe the reason people are inspired and delighted with the experience of receiving personalized poems that I spontaneously craft comes from a mixture of my inviting listening skills, instinct, and keen observation and intuition about what all kinds of different people long for. I do not use a formula. Each occasion and event is unique. Depending on the atmosphere, I develop a theme and questions that align, serving as a starting place. But I'm always willing to write a poem about whatever someone wants. Often, I incorporate a word they've shared (or their first name) and write an acrostic form (i.e., the first word of each line of the poem begins with a letter from the word​/​their name). This adds even more individualism to their poem and bolsters my own process, preventing me from overthinking, an obstacle to sparky-good typewriter poetry. With free, spontaneous urgency, my typewriter poems arrive untethered and light, reflecting our brief, friendly, easy connection. It's magic, capturing something important to each person, in this moment in time. Sometimes, the poems make people cry. Sometimes, laugh. Sometimes, shriek with delight. Wherever I'm stationed with my typewriter, word spreads quickly. Their eager eyes remind me of children in line at an ice cream parlor.
